IELTS score
Hi all,Sun Sep 18, 2005 09:12 AM I need help, I am an international student. Recently I passed IELTS and got 7.0 overall, but my marks in speaking and writing were 6.0. I want to apply to several LLM programs in the UK in 2006-2007. Do you think it is worth to be satisfied with this marks or I should reteake the exams? Thanks to all in advance |

hiTue Sep 20, 2005 06:26 PM most of the top rank universities require socre of 7.5 , yet others will be satisfied with your socre , however, if you apply for the top rank universities you are between securing unconditional offer or at least getting conditional one which mean in your case you have to attend the one month english course in the university. Anas, do you know whether this applies to Oxford as well? I thought with a 7 they would not even consider your application, as 7,5 is minimum. Please clarify... Thanks.

hi MaudeThu Sep 22, 2005 12:05 AM indeed , i do not have idea about these two exceptional universities oxford and cambridge, yet others such as queen mary and manchester university will consider your application if you have 7.0 therefore they will offer you conditional offer , the condition will be attending english cousre for at leat one month . what i suggest is checking the website of university which you are intersted in . Hi, folksFri Oct 07, 2005 10:31 AM If you don't mind I'd like to share my own experience with all of you. Maybe someone out there could find it of any interest or help. I took the IELTS test last July 16th. My achieved marks were not exactly fabulous: Reading 7.5, Listening 7.5, Writing 6 and Speaking 7, with an overall band score of 7. Those results were enough for Manchester and Edimburgh, but certainly below UCL, KC and QM linguistic requirements. I'm interested on IP and Entertainment so, I couldn't allow myself turning the back on those three. After thinking about it for a while, I decided to ask for a re-mark (87€) rather than take the test again (165€). I was unhappy only with the Writing and Speaking assesment so I thought that taking the whole test again could be a waste of time in my case. The new results reached me this week. The band-score awarded to my Writing test has been increased FROM 6 TO 7, the Speaking mark remained the same, and, consequently, my overall band has increased TO BAND 7.5. Also, the re-mark fee I paid will be refunded shortly by my test centre. Don't get me wrong, I truly believe IELTS is a very precise tool to evalute linguistic skills. Asking for a re-mark is not always the better way to get higher marks but, sometimes, it could be the only way instead of taking the test again. Don't you cheat yourselves on this and think it hard before following this path. I was pretty sure that some parts of my test were undermarked so I went for it. I don't know if it was a lucky shot or not but, what I do know from my test centre in Madrid is that I'm the first guy who get his results re-marked. I hope someone could find this helpful. IELTS fees are not cheap and the process to get ready to pass the test with nice marks is long and certainly expensive (books, teachers, etc.).
