For those who completed the application process for next year (2005-2006), have you already received any news from the Universities ?

Nice to see you here.

One thing to update. Last week a friend of mine got accepted into LL.M taxation program of Northwestern University. Still, I have heard nothing about my LL.M. General studies from there.

Hi Chris, I jorge,

This forum seems to be more active than the other one !

I applied to NUY Columbia Stanford Berkeley and Harvard.

I just heard from Harvard that they missed a recommendation letter from one of my professors... so it is kind of bad news but I will try to fix it...

The other universities have just informed me that they received my application... but no acceptance letter yet !

I announced that I will quit my job in six months but I am still not sure whether I will be accepted in a law school !!!!!

Kind of getting tired of waiting... no news from any of the acceptance letters... not even a single e-mail or information indicating for an expected time for getting them...

Do you know, when an acceptance letter is received, how much time have you got to reply? Aprox.

I would like to know that too, but as I have only sent my applications a short time ago I guess, from all what you are writing, I will still be in for a long time of waiting... but NYU should be a little easier to get in right? They seem to be accepting a much larger of LLM students?

Admit to UVa. I checked the online status from Cornell, and it saids that they have made a decision regarding my application, but the decision will be sent by mail.

Still waiting from other universities.

Hi,
If you've been admitted to UVa , forget about Cornell. UVa's law school has a much better reputation than Cornell's. UVa is actually one of the top feeder schools for the best US law firms, right up there with Harvard, Columbia and NYU. UVa also offers twice as many courses as Cornell. Finally, UVa has a better alumni network!

P.S. Cornell is also an excellent law school, dont get me wrong - however it is definately a notch below UVa.

One more thing - Cornell has a better reputation OUTSIDE the United-States than UVa.

If you're planning on working internationally, then Cornell is the better choice. However, if you want to work at a top US firm, then UVa will give you many more opportunities.

Ray: Sorry about your missing recommendation letter. Hope you solve it very soon. For my HLS application, I just got a blue postcard dated Feb 2, 2005, confirming its completeness yesterday, That makes me relieve a lot after a long waiting!!!. Still looking forward to hearing the decision.

Mexllm: Congratulations on your UVA admission. I agree with bonobo that the matter of the University's reputation depends on where you will be back to work.

About Cornell status check, how can you do that? I have tried many times but it ends up with a result that my application is not in their database. However, I got the confirmation of receipt and completeness of my application since last November. Anyonce facing the problem like mine?

Go!!!: I answered that question once in other webboard but copy it down here for your convenience.

In general, once offerred a seat in a ll.m. program, you are required to accept your offer of admission to that law school, perhaps with some deposits. A deadline for your acceptance, period of which is different according to each law school, will be given in the decision mail or the admitted student website. I understand that for some schools if you cannot make such commitment in time, you are allowed to ask for an extension. But please make sure that you make a request for such extension as earliest as you can and already obtain their grant before doing so.

Where do you come from? I am from Switzerland....

The four other universities have just informed me that they received my application... also waiting for other acceptance letters! I 'm in the same situation...

I live in Bangkok, Thailand and did apply for HLS, Michigan, UPenn, Cornell, Northwestern and Georgetown. Right now, I only got offers from Cornell and Georgetown. The other schools still remain silent.

Reno: Is cornell the place you are going to go? If so, nice to meet my first classmate. I am likely to go there regardless of the result of Penn, Northwestern and Michigan. Cornell's reputation is very very good here in my country. However, if accepted by HLS, I will be forced to go to Masachusette instead but it's so not gonna happen.

Chris: There are really good chances that we are going to be classmates in Cornell! I am sure we will have a good time there =) I think I will also go there unless I got an admission letter from HLS or Stanford... next month we will know...

What you wrote about HLS ... you never know - you already made it Cornell why not to HLS ... you proofed already that you have an outstanding record (I think Richard D. Geiger, the Dean of Admissions of the Cornell Law School sent the same letter to you =)

I my country Cornell has a very good reputation and in a ranking list I found in the net (www.auap.com/llm.html) it's among the three best LLM-Programs in the Staates... But I am sure you can find in the web many other rankings which show you other results...

Wow, Bangkok... a month ago I stayed in the peninsula and I used the skytrain ...

Hi,

I would like to warn anyone who relies on AUAP’s ranking of LL.M. programs. This ranking is not only unreliable, it is also fraudulent.

You will notice that AUAP provides absolutely no methodology or numbers or statistics to back up its ranking. AUAP’s objective is not to provide a real ranking, but to convince its clients (students who pay them $$$ for help with admissions) that they are getting them admitted into a “top school”, when they only succeed in sending them to very weak or average schools.

Many schools on that list are second or third tier schools: for example LSU, Cardozo, Penn State, Tulane, etc…

Some of the above schools are not even among the top 50 best law schools in the US!

Moreover, several exceptional programs, such as Michigan, Virginia, and Stanford, which are clearly top 10 schools, are curiously missing from AUAP’s list.

For anyone who wants a real ranking of how a law school is viewed in the United-States, please see Brian Lighter’s faculty quality ranking or the US News ranking.

P.S. rankings never give you the full story, nor do they tell if a program is right for you. Use them wisely! For example, if in your country Cornell is highly regarded, then by all means go to Cornell, even if it’s not “top ten”. The value of a degree is highly subjective depending on where you plan to work.

I fully agree with the opinions set forth in the prior posting. The law, like all social sciences, is an abstract construct, and its highly academic instruction is difficult to quantify with rankings (to the chagrin of many an incoming student attempting to choose the "right" school). Go to the law school that offers what you want, and has the best reputation in your home country (as opposed to the published rankings). At least in the US, you pay too much money and spend too much time in your studies to follow a course of study at an institution only because it is supposedly highly ranked. Also, please take this as advice, but the practice of law is often....ROTE and BORING!! You may want to do something else with your degree in your home country after five or tens years of legal work (work for an NGO, run for office, work in company, etc...). These non-legal employers often don't know or what a tort or summary judgment motion is or what grade you got in civil procedure, but there is a chance they'll known that, for example, former US President Clinton went to Georgetown where you did your LLM. Just some friendly advice from a US attorney with many disgruntled European colleagues with US LLMs who no longer work in the legal field but in jobs, some of which, they probably did not envision working at before law school.

Has anyone received any reply from U of Michigan? by email or mail? just curious because some said that Umich has begun notifying their applicants for week but i have got nothing now.

A friend of mine got his Michigan acceptance a week ago and he has until late-March to confirm.

I hope you get into Michigan! Better school than Cornell and a HUGE alumni network. Cornell alumni are centered around Boston and NY, whereas Michigan alumni are all over the United-States ... it's a much more national school. Virginia is slightly more national than Michigan, though it's more eastern-seaboard oriented whereas Michigan has a stronger network in the midwest.

Cornell is still excellent though - you should be thrilled about your admission! The only downside to Cornell is that they dont offer a wde variety of courses because the law school is so small.

I prefer UVa over Cornell. I also applied to UMich, but I haven't received a response. I wrote to an admissions officer three days ago and she responded to me that I will have a decision in the next few weeks.

I sent my applications to Cornell and UMich late november and to UVa late december.

We are having much more participation in this forum, I hope that it continues this way.

How are responses from UMich being sent? Email or mail?
