Hi Chris, I jorge,

This forum seems to be more active than the other one !

I applied to NUY Columbia Stanford Berkeley and Harvard.

I just heard from Harvard that they missed a recommendation letter from one of my professors... so it is kind of bad news but I will try to fix it...

The other universities have just informed me that they received my application... but no acceptance letter yet !

I announced that I will quit my job in six months but I am still not sure whether I will be accepted in a law school !!!!!
STRESS !!!

Hi,
If you've been admitted to UVa , forget about Cornell. UVa's law school has a much better reputation than Cornell's. UVa is actually one of the top feeder schools for the best US law firms, right up there with Harvard, Columbia and NYU. UVa also offers twice as many courses as Cornell. Finally, UVa has a better alumni network!

Cheers, and congrats on your UVa acceptance!

P.S. Cornell is also an excellent law school, dont get me wrong - however it is definately a notch below UVa.

One more thing - Cornell has a better reputation OUTSIDE the United-States than UVa.

If you're planning on working internationally, then Cornell is the better choice. However, if you want to work at a top US firm, then UVa will give you many more opportunities.

Ray: Sorry about your missing recommendation letter. Hope you solve it very soon. For my HLS application, I just got a blue postcard dated Feb 2, 2005, confirming its completeness yesterday, That makes me relieve a lot after a long waiting!!!. Still looking forward to hearing the decision.

Mexllm: Congratulations on your UVA admission. I agree with bonobo that the matter of the University's reputation depends on where you will be back to work.

About Cornell status check, how can you do that? I have tried many times but it ends up with a result that my application is not in their database. However, I got the confirmation of receipt and completeness of my application since last November. Anyonce facing the problem like mine?

Go!!!: I answered that question once in other webboard but copy it down here for your convenience.

In general, once offerred a seat in a ll.m. program, you are required to accept your offer of admission to that law school, perhaps with some deposits. A deadline for your acceptance, period of which is different according to each law school, will be given in the decision mail or the admitted student website. I understand that for some schools if you cannot make such commitment in time, you are allowed to ask for an extension. But please make sure that you make a request for such extension as earliest as you can and already obtain their grant before doing so.

Keep posting if you receive more admission news!!!

Good luck

Hi

I live in Bangkok, Thailand and did apply for HLS, Michigan, UPenn, Cornell, Northwestern and Georgetown. Right now, I only got offers from Cornell and Georgetown. The other schools still remain silent.

Reno: Is cornell the place you are going to go? If so, nice to meet my first classmate. I am likely to go there regardless of the result of Penn, Northwestern and Michigan. Cornell's reputation is very very good here in my country. However, if accepted by HLS, I will be forced to go to Masachusette instead but it's so not gonna happen.

Hi!

Chris: There are really good chances that we are going to be classmates in Cornell! I am sure we will have a good time there =) I think I will also go there unless I got an admission letter from HLS or Stanford... next month we will know...

What you wrote about HLS ... you never know - you already made it Cornell why not to HLS ... you proofed already that you have an outstanding record (I think Richard D. Geiger, the Dean of Admissions of the Cornell Law School sent the same letter to you =)

I my country Cornell has a very good reputation and in a ranking list I found in the net (http://www.auap.com/llm.html) it's among the three best LLM-Programs in the Staates... But I am sure you can find in the web many other rankings which show you other results...

Wow, Bangkok... a month ago I stayed in the peninsula and I used the skytrain ...

Rey: Good things come to those who wait... you will see! =)

bonobo: Re: LLM acceptance letters

Hi,

I would like to warn anyone who relies on AUAP’s ranking of LL.M. programs. This ranking is not only unreliable, it is also fraudulent.

You will notice that AUAP provides absolutely no methodology or numbers or statistics to back up its ranking. AUAP’s objective is not to provide a real ranking, but to convince its clients (students who pay them $$$ for help with admissions) that they are getting them admitted into a “top school”, when they only succeed in sending them to very weak or average schools.

Many schools on that list are second or third tier schools: for example LSU, Cardozo, Penn State, Tulane, etc…

Some of the above schools are not even among the top 50 best law schools in the US!

Moreover, several exceptional programs, such as Michigan, Virginia, and Stanford, which are clearly top 10 schools, are curiously missing from AUAP’s list.

For anyone who wants a real ranking of how a law school is viewed in the United-States, please see Brian Lighter’s faculty quality ranking or the US News ranking.

Hope this helps!

P.S. rankings never give you the full story, nor do they tell if a program is right for you. Use them wisely! For example, if in your country Cornell is highly regarded, then by all means go to Cornell, even if it’s not “top ten”. The value of a degree is highly subjective depending on where you plan to work.

I fully agree with the opinions set forth in the prior posting. The law, like all social sciences, is an abstract construct, and its highly academic instruction is difficult to quantify with rankings (to the chagrin of many an incoming student attempting to choose the "right" school). Go to the law school that offers what you want, and has the best reputation in your home country (as opposed to the published rankings). At least in the US, you pay too much money and spend too much time in your studies to follow a course of study at an institution only because it is supposedly highly ranked. Also, please take this as advice, but the practice of law is often....ROTE and BORING!! You may want to do something else with your degree in your home country after five or tens years of legal work (work for an NGO, run for office, work in company, etc...). These non-legal employers often don't know or what a tort or summary judgment motion is or what grade you got in civil procedure, but there is a chance they'll known that, for example, former US President Clinton went to Georgetown where you did your LLM. Just some friendly advice from a US attorney with many disgruntled European colleagues with US LLMs who no longer work in the legal field but in jobs, some of which, they probably did not envision working at before law school.

A friend of mine got his Michigan acceptance a week ago and he has until late-March to confirm.

I hope you get into Michigan! Better school than Cornell and a HUGE alumni network. Cornell alumni are centered around Boston and NY, whereas Michigan alumni are all over the United-States ... it's a much more national school. Virginia is slightly more national than Michigan, though it's more eastern-seaboard oriented whereas Michigan has a stronger network in the midwest.

Cornell is still excellent though - you should be thrilled about your admission! The only downside to Cornell is that they dont offer a wde variety of courses because the law school is so small.

mexllm: Re: LLM acceptance letters

I believe I did but I guess it's up to the Admissions Committee to decide. I have also heard that HLS tends to distribute its admissions geographically, so I am really competing with other Mexican lawyers that applied.

As to the competitive admissions, the HLS program is bigger than UVA's, but I guess more people apply to it (and few people pass the opportunity to attend to Harvard). I have heard of people that have not been admiited to other programs (UVA, Chicago) and have been admitted to HLS. So you never know.

Bonono, one question... is your friend really you? Just kidding.

Best of luck to everyone. Let try to make this discussion group as popular as possible. LLM's have very few resources online (compared with JD's), and we can surely gain alot from everyone's comments.

I applied to HLS and Yale last year and didn't get an response before April. You can, however, give them a call around mid March and ask when they will send out the letters. They will tell you the day and will also provide the date you inquire about the outcome which safes, of course, a lot of time, especially if you are outside the US. The only requirement is that you call in person and are able to answer some simple questions (like birthday and -place, date of your graduation, etc.) Good luck to all of you.

You should completely forget about the rankings of some of these weirdo LL.M. lists on the web. The only ranking that counts is the law school ranking from US News. What does it help, if NYU is ranked better than Harvard, for instance, if nobody outside the US can tell the difference between the University of Miami and NYU? Also, the prestige of the university itself will always follow your LL.M degree, which means that a Harvard degree will always have a better reputation than one from Columbia (even though Columbia is one of the schools that is really close to the H-bomb), because in the end, Harvard's other schools and programs have a huge impact on the overall prestige. I haven't heard of Brown or Dartmouth before I arrived to the States, even though they belong also to the Ivy League Schools. But both universities have only a few top programs that in the end suffer from the rankings of the other programs, a reason these schools are not overly know abroad. I agree with the opinion already stated by somebody and recommend to go for the brand, if you are a foreigner, and don't plan to spend your life doing corporate law in New York. For US lawyers, of course, other criteria should be more important.

Hi,

As we are talking "brand" and reputation... could you please give me your opinion on the five law schools I applied to :

HLS (ok, I already know that it's the most prestigious)
Columbia, Berkeley, Stanford, NYU.

By the way, I still haven't received any final decision... but I did receive a scholarship from an institution in my country. The only condition is that I get accepted to one of these lawschools.

Cheers !

I heard that someone from my country (Belgium) received an acceptance letter from Columbia.
I do not know whether he applied for financial assistance.
Well at least, I did ... and I personnaly think that I should not have because it seems to delay the review...
Anyway, congratulations for your acceptance letter.

Hi!! yes, they would give me partial financial assistance. However, a year at Columbia is expensive. The overall expenses for the year of study for a single student are almost U$ 60.000.
Peggy, congratulations on your admissions! I think the choice between a large or small program is very personal, and has to do with where you would feel more confortable...

Congratulations on your admissions to those schools. According to your profile, you are undoubtedly their first choice. That's why you receive the offers very early.

Chris,

I didn’t write a TOEFL since my first degree was in English.

As to your kind remark about my being their first choice, I don’t think that’s the case. I called several of my friends who applied and two of them got admitted with financial aid (both got half tuition). They must have had better records than I did.

Harvard sent the offer of admission by letter. Since I wasn’t the only person to get the acceptance today, I assume they mailed all their first round of offers at the same time earlier this week.

My first choice remains Yale, but still no answer!

Come on, your profile is so incredible. I think being granted the financial aid depends on each applicant's financial need, doesn't it?

Sorry to keep asking but still want to know when u sent your applications to all schools. I sent mine to HLS right before deadline and just received the blue postcard last two weeks. It may take very long time for me to get the reply.

don't worry, I am sure it must be a problem with the post - you can always phone them and let them know, just in case something is missing from your application (because the blue card indicates that), so they can let you know. This way you be more calm!:)

Marcia,
I only received one card from Harvard (most people received two) and it didnt seem to hurt my admission. In any event, my understanding is that Harvard already mailed out their admission decisions to 200 candidates via international priority mail (mine arrived in two days to Tokyo) and all that remains is for them to make a wait list in the event that a lot of admitted candidates dont accept the offer (or can't afford to attend!).

I think the program has 150 places.

Hi all, I had an even stranger experience from Harvard admissions! One month ago, they send me a card saying that my application was incomplete: I was missing an English translation of my grades (because my transcript is from Mali) and I also forgot to answer one of the questions in the essays. In truth, I didn’t know what to write for part A and I left it blank, hoping they wouldn’t notice.

When Harvard wrote that I was missing these things, I was travelling and I didn’t receive their letter. However, I got the good news (admission1!!) yesterday …. So I guess that if your application was missing things, it doesn’t really matter in their decision.

Also it has to be good for you. If it does not happen, it means you are destined to something else which for yourself and your goals, is by far superior-it will help you more. You have to see both the acceptances and the rejections with a smile and an open mind, because either is for your own good! Good luck to everyone!xxxxxxxxx

Iclmar, I think that you're absolutely right. You have to go with the flow, and take things as they come. Most importantly, learn from them!

I got rejected from all these schools last year, but this year when I applied I did it differently and things are looking bright so far.

If you dont get admitted, take a year of to think about why you didnt get in, and use this fresh perspective to have a better application next year. For me, it was changing the focus of my personal statement from my career objectives (working in IP law, specificallly the music industry and rap) and focusing instead on me underpriviledged upbringing.

I felt as if my unique ability to make magic flow from my pen would not credence to my story of learning to read and write by myself after finding a book in the Kalahari desert. So I payed a home-schooled high school student $50 to write it for me. It read as if he had absolutely no formal writing education at all! I think it definitely helped.

I hope you find something that works for you too!

Sage,
I think you can still apply to NYU, Georgetown and Penn ... I might be mistaken, but I believe their deadline is March 1st. They are ranked 1st, 4th and 14th, respectively, in international and comparative law. This is based on the faculty quality ranking by Brian Leiter. All are excellent top tier universities in other areas of law as well.

If I were in your position, I would apply via overnight mail immediately or, better yet, use their online application.

Iclmar:

Yes! Get work experience, walk the earth, find yourself, and approach your applications differently next year. Get some better letters of recommendation, maybe add a video or audiotape of yourself (I sent them my music CD) and find an original angle for your personal statement. I bet that 90% of applicants write vapid statements about how they want to do “humanitarian law”, or “international human rights” etc … I think people in admissions offices are sick to the stomach of reading this drivel day in, day out. They know all you want is that degree to hang on your wall so you can make a lot of dough!

You need something fresh! You need to stand out among all these people with super academic credentials. I certainly didn’t have the grades, but I made sure that my application was different and memorable.

bonobo: Re: LLM acceptance letters

In my opinion, you are better off going to the University of Pennsylvania. The school is essentially a feeder school for New-York law firms. Its graduates generally practice in New-York (and within the Northeast corridor), whereas Duke graduates are more dispersed across the US. This means that you will have many more opportunities to hook up with Penn alumni in NY, where I assume you will be practicing yourself since LL.M. students can take the NY bar exam.

I also believe that Penn has a much stronger faculty than Duke in every category, except IP where Duke has a definite edge. Keep in mind that Duke also has a *gorgeous* campus.

Good luck with your choice! Both are top notch schools and it could come down to a matter of taste.

Hi All:

I have just found out about this site. It seems pretty cool, but tends to make everybody a bit more nervous.

I would like to congratulate the people who got accepted where the wanted!

So far I have received offers of admission from UVa, Chicago and UPenn. I am still waiting to hear from NYU, Columbia and HLS (these three are actually my first choice ones).

Do you think that there is still a chance to get offers from these schools or all of the offers have already been made. As far as I understand the offers from NYU and HLS should be made about March the latest. But I don’t understand the situation with the term in Columbia.

R you all sure about the alphabetical order of the application review or what other systems could they use?

   Hi all,
It was great to find a place to talk about LL.M without somebody who is part interested in taken your money!!
I am from Spain, I just got my law degree one year ago, after that I went to USA to catch up with my english, so I do not have work experience yet. Eventhough, I got a good Toefl score and I have decided to try to do a LL.M un Usa. My grades are really bad, so I do not know this is worthwhile at all. I am interested in Maritime Law, so I applyed to Tulane and I have been admitted. Good news!, but 30000 dollars, and then one is fearful of not being able to get a job after all. Like there is not much about Maritime in Usa, I aldo tryed with Arizona U, Rogers College, I heard some of you talking about it (trade), and Louisiana St Un, and Temple. I have been rejected in Southampton (UK) , and from the others I do not know yet. Well this is my story, Glad to know about yours, Congratulations for everyone who has been admitted (huge names: harvard....) and If someone wants to share something about their experience, it will be a pleasure.
  Bye!

I am truely amazed to see these ppl with incredible profile on this discussion board. It excites me just to think that I probably will have a chance to study in the same classroom with these wonderful ppl...
I was informed by Columbia by email last week that I was admitted, but no more details. a formal letter is on its way. I also applied for NYU, HLS, Upenn, Cornell and Duke. No rejection, yet no admission as well. I sent out application at the end of Nov.
Gook luck to those who haven't heard anything.

Yo Maggie! I was shocked by your "gook" comment! Why don’t you like people from Vietnam? Although you may believe that your race is inherently superior to others, and/or that individuals should be treated differently according to their racial designation, I personally find that offensive.

Can't we all just get along?

Hi Everyone,

I received an e-mail from Harvard on friday saying that I'd been accepted and that details will folow. Haven't heard from NYU, Michigan, and Columbia, which are the other three schools to which I've applied. I wonder what's happening there.
