Career Opportunities after LLM?

Hi,
What kind of Job/career does one usually go into after graduating from an LLM program, given the individual does not hold a JD (or its european equivalent) which would allow him/her to be a practicing attorney?

Would the only options be a legal counsel?

Any information would be much appreciated. Thank you.

The LLM offers very little career optionsin legal practice. What matters to firms is your LLB grades and work experience. However, an LLM will be good for non-lawyer roles like teaching, public sector and research.

Hi capa could you tell us about your experience on "What matters to firms is your LLB grades and work experience"...so for an international firm is not important a LLM...

Hi Lippy - an LLM is usually undertaken by lawyers already in practice to specialise. Naturally, Australian firms will like an LLM if it is relevant to their practice areas. However, in the end, I would imagine they prefer raw talent as opposed to knowledge. A few subjects in tax will not make you a good tax lawyer. This is why a strong LLB and extensive experience if vital. Combined with these, it could give an edge.

Hi capa tx for your reply. I agree with you about the experience and the base (LLB or JD or similar) that you must have to be prepared for the work, but in the international field i think a LLM is absolutely necessary. And a person who attend a LLM is expecting to work in a non domestic law firm, and hope to have a well paid job.

Greetings all,
If one has obtained a University degree in Public Policy and Administration and in addition, completes a L.L.M. in Alternative Dispute Resolution, what are the potential career opportunities?

Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

I have just completed a BA in Social Care and would be very interested in doing a L.L.M but I don't know what career opportunities that would leave me with. Can anyone suggest some possibilities?

I am a graduate in International Relations and Global Development and am considering an LLM in International Law and wondered about career options as well, obviously I dont have an LLB and this is my concern...

Is it worthwhile undertaking this course given my background?

Hello.
I`m about to graduate the LL.M Commercial law degree from the Erasmus University of Rotterdam.
I have graduated Law and I have experience as an associate in a Law firm for 6 months.
What do You think are my chances to find a decent job in the field of law?
What do You think of the university itself?
Thanks a lot.

I do agree with capa. I am a qualified lawyer with several years experience in small law firms. I am doing a LLM in a very prestigious UK University. I want to restart a career in my in international law firms. So far I have been rejected from all international law firms I have applied to. I discussed with head hunters and people from HR department of international law firms. They told me : forget about international law firms even with an LLM because you don't have experience in these law firms and they are reluctant to hire an experienced lawyer even if he has a LLM and is willing to restart from scractch. That's very tough but everyone should be aware that for these law firms the LLM is relevant only after a bachelor or Master and maybe evenbefore you are qualified. They can take you as intern and keep you upon qualification. Apart this drawback, the LLM is a very interesting and rewarding experience. I really enjoy it but I am desappointed about the possibility of employement after completion.
