Career Opportunities after LLM?
Hi,Wed Nov 30, 2005 06:36 PM What kind of Job/career does one usually go into after graduating from an LLM program, given the individual does not hold a JD (or its european equivalent) which would allow him/her to be a practicing attorney? Would the only options be a legal counsel? Any information would be much appreciated. Thank you. |

The LLM offers very little career optionsin legal practice. What matters to firms is your LLB grades and work experience. However, an LLM will be good for non-lawyer roles like teaching, public sector and research. Tue Dec 13, 2005 10:07 AM |

Hi capa could you tell us about your experience on "What matters to firms is your LLB grades and work experience"...so for an international firm is not important a LLM... |

Hi Lippy - an LLM is usually undertaken by lawyers already in practice to specialise. Naturally, Australian firms will like an LLM if it is relevant to their practice areas. However, in the end, I would imagine they prefer raw talent as opposed to knowledge. A few subjects in tax will not make you a good tax lawyer. This is why a strong LLB and extensive experience if vital. Combined with these, it could give an edge.

Hi capa tx for your reply. I agree with you about the experience and the base (LLB or JD or similar) that you must have to be prepared for the work, but in the international field i think a LLM is absolutely necessary. And a person who attend a LLM is expecting to work in a non domestic law firm, and hope to have a well paid job.
