The 'League Tabling' at the early part s of the thread is misleading. Quality of life in Uxbridge is almost nil although there is a lot of ego flowing. If you want to spend half of your LLM time catching trains to party in London then go to Uxbridge. Warwick is in the middle of nowhere despite good academics. It's a 20th Century Uni, which I doubt has a Royal Charter. On the other hand, London LLM's are first Class. Quality education and quality of life balance. There is the buzz of the City. There's more to an LLM than books. Being at the financial centre of the world, in the legal part of it as well - is simply unmatched. And that's even before we talk about the bars, clubs, restaurants and beautiful fashionable people!

I totally the agree. The fact is you are doing a post-graduate degree that should braoden you both socially and academically. When you do an LLM in London, other than the obvious partying and social gatherings etc. you get the opportunity to listen to great lectures from famous people almost everyday. For instance on March 31st Pascal Lamy from the WTO is giving a lecture at LSE.Tue Mar 28, 2006 05:24 PM If it was an udergraduate degree definately go to Oxbridge, no questions asked, however for post graduate study you should seriously consider the schools in London, in particular LSE and UCL. |

sorry tortello,Wed Mar 29, 2006 02:39 PM my words will sound a bit harsh, but do u really think there's a reputation ranking in italy which recruiters bear in mind? and u think italian recruiters are seriously informed about uk universities? i think the whole recruitment process in italy is quite dodgy and depends highly on luck and on being acquainted to right people. to all italian students i would say to choose according to the real value of the university, eventually having a look at official rankings and looking at the subjects they want to study. regards to everyone |

Hi tortello, Wed Mar 29, 2006 03:14 PM In relation to Queen Mary, the only "unfavourable" attribute would be that it is located in the undesireable East London (or so I hear). Otherwise, QMUL is a very good school. Besides, you obtain the degree from the "University of London". LLM (London) - does not really matter where you get it because all 5 schools are top notch. I just hear that travel through the bad parts of East London detract from the overal amenity of Queen Mary. Vincenzo - I'm an Italian citizen with cousins in Florence (one of whom is a lawyer) and top schools are in fact recognised. Oxford, Cambridge, London are held to be more prestigious in the same way Roma - La S and Bologna have that sense of prestige. Cheers ~ |

Thank you for your answers guys.Wed Mar 29, 2006 03:56 PM I would only like to point out one consideration: it's really true that in Italy the recruitment process is not always clear and much depends on luck and people you know and refer to. But when I talk about the international ranking I mean that one considered by legal office such as Clifford Chance, Allen overy, Freshfields, Dewey ballantine and so one, whose recruiters in italy are often English or American and consider also univ's reputation. I didn't know about Queen's location...anyway I believe that London has much more advantages than oxbridge, considering social life and opportunities....hasn't it? ciao Tortello |

hi again guys,Wed Mar 29, 2006 09:47 PM yes both right about night and social life, london is the bloody place to be, if i had to name a city in the world that's london without any hesitation (sydney comes just after that capa!), i'm just going to spend a weekend there on friday. nevertheless i did not apply to any univs there as i considered the whole thing far too expensive and unconvenent and therefore opted for other universities and now i'm in manchester. it ranks 4th and 5th in the two main rankings, don't really know what's its reputation in italy but honestly that's never been my concern. it's a uk university and any reliable perspective is a uk one, that's what i looked for. capa, in italy we don't have proper rankings like in anglosaxon countries and the reputation is mainly based on historical importance. sometimes this can be a reliable criteria like for bologna, but it's not always true: i studied in naples which enjoys a huge reputation, but it's just crap! are u planning ur llm tortello? bye for now |

This is true Vincenzo - the thing keeping me away from the UK and UK (London in particular) is the fact I will need a major scholarship to even contemplate undertaking an LLM there. The sad reality of the privatisation of law schools i'm afraid. Thu Mar 30, 2006 11:28 AM I guess you are right. For example in the common law world, no one knows how schools in the civil law world rank (apart from, of course, Sorbonne, Leuven and Leiden which are highly pretigious in their own right) - perhaps this is why Oxbridge may be obvious. This may be of assistance to the Italians above. The QMUL LL.M is taught in the City (Square Mile). It's next to Charterhouse Square which is a few minutes from the Barbican tube station, NOT at the Mile End Campus. In addition, 2 modules may be taken at other UOL Uni's. Therefore location is not an issue unless you fail to get intercollegiate accommodation or other else.

If you want to do an LL.M. go for Oxford, Cambridge, UCL or LSE. You can do specialised LLMs at the London unis and that's a big benefit, don't forget.Mon Sep 18, 2006 10:16 PM Whoever keeps banging on about Warwick, just hush up. It's a polytechnic in a dire part of the country. It's not a top University, and you'll struggle to find successful lawyers either here or abroad with degrees from there. In some asian countries, i believe oxford is renowned ahead of cambridge while some persons consider cambridge a more competitive place to study. But for postgraduate, interalia, LLM, BCL/MJur is definitely more Tue Sep 19, 2006 03:46 AM demanding and thus more well-known. I should express my opinion that Oxford maybe at this level may surpass Cambridge. |
