Are all US LLM's the same price?

capa Joined: 10 Oct 2005 Posts: 164	Are all US LLM's the same price? Mon Dec 05, 2005 08:39 AM Hey everyone, I was looking at afew US law schools and notice the price is usually US$25,000. Would this be the same for all law schools? Are any more reasonable? Out of curiosity, what is the most expensive? (if known). Many thanks.

Stanford and Yale are also top-of-the-notch. Take a look at Austin, Texas and UW-Madison. They are cheaper. But in the case of Madison, this is bound to a research-only degree.

Mon Dec 26, 2005 02:41 AM Unofortunately the inflation of tuition is so severe in U.S. Many of private university law schools require you to pay arouns US$35,000 or more per year only for tuition in recent a few years. Some public university law schools offer less than private schools. But top public university law schools like Michigan, UC-Berkeley and Virginia ask you to pay almost same prive with private university law schools. You need to consider around US$25,000 through US$28,000 for tuition if you think about some top notch schools among Top25 through 35 level institutions like University of Minnesota(Twin City), University of Illinois(Urbana-Champaign), University of Washington(Seattle), UCLA, UC-Davis, Indiana(Bloomington) and Wisconsin(Madison). Only Texas(Austin), perhaps supported by good Texan Oil Money, can offer much less tuition than other top notch public law schools' LL.M. In addition to tuition, you should think about living cost. You may enjoy less living cost if you go to college towns like Urbana-Champaign(Illinois), Davis(UC-Davis), Bloomington(Indiana), Madison(Wisconsin) and Charlottsvile(Virginia). On the other hand, unfortunately Ann-Arbor(Michigan) is too close by Detroit. The situation of Berkley(UC-Berkeley) is the same in Bay Area of San Francisco, where the living cost is counted in the highest level of U.S. Minneapolis-St. Paul(Minnesota), Seattle(Washington) and Los Angeles(UCLA) and Texas(Austin) are also in urban areas with a little higher livign cost.

However, the coures-based program is MLI (Master of Legal Institution) which is exactly as same as LL.M. of other University's LL.M. It is also approved by ABA and is elegible for taking NY bar exam. I am a current MLI student. However, this program prefer an applicant from far east such as China, Taiwan or Korea. [Edited 16 Jan 2006 by pra608]

Besides, in order to encourage participation by law graduates from Latin American countries, the local Government may qualify you to matriculate at resident tuition rates. I e-mailed a with several top 50 schools, and found out which school's might do this. Also, living costs might save you a lot. Like living in the south and/or smaller cities. It is possible to make it cheaper!

I am also interested in doing an LLM in USA next year, with my husband, but we can´t afford to pay two LLM´s, so we were considering other options: maybe I could do an internship, post graduate courses, etc. Nevertheless, I have been researching and someone told me that Financial Aid could by an interesting option (for example, if the both of us pay a 1 1/2 tuition, or something like that.) Someone else also told me about the tuition waiver, and about some institutions to which you pay (about US$ 3,000) and they get you accepted in one of the universities you want, and also get you the tuition waiver... have you heard about that? do you have any idea of other options? Thu Jun 26, 2008 02:28 PM Hi Ceeder, As regards your first question my answers would be as follows: (i) When you are attending a highly ranked law school chances are bigger that you will gain a more superb education than while being a student at "x'th tier" school. (ii) Although please note that employment perspectives of an LL.M. graduate (even of the most demanding law schools) at times (to put it mildly) are not quite bright and now, in the very midst of a recession, seems to be even more dismal and you have to take into consideration the way a future hiring partner will evaluate your qualifications. (iii) It's quite a rule of thumb – the more higher a school's place in ranking the bigger are chances that its scholarships' and subsidized loans' program for LL.M. students is more comprehensive. Thus, sometimes it's cheaper to attend a more prestigious school. With respect to your second query my answer is rather simple – except for very limited circumstances it's forbidden for an F-1 holder (student type visa) to work while pursuing his/her course of studies. And finally regarding your last question, I can't help you here, for I'm yet to embark on my LL.M… :) Good Luck!!!

In addition, in order to be issued such a visa, you need to provide an American Embassy with an I-20 form issued by a school where you have been admitted, such issuance will be possible only after you have provided to your school a proof that you have sufficient funds for the entire course of studies. Sufficient funds should cover all your tuition and living expenses... Hope it sheds some light...

Ergo, you get to reap the benefits of the Florida taxpayers even if you aren't a resident per their statutes. Out of state tuition is attractive, in state is down right gorgeous. B.U. is about $7g a year less than Northwestern / NYU / Georgetown. I've seen most top programs around $40g. $25 sounds pretty good to me with seat deposits coming due... -M
