LLM in Petroleum Law

janisrar Joined: 20 Dec 2005 Posts: 5	LLM in Petroleum Law Wed Dec 21, 2005 08:35 AM Hi, I have got my MBA & MS-IT from Pakistan having 8 years of experience ranging from sales to petroleum law side. Currently I am doing my LLB which will be completed this year in June. Can somebody guide me regarding an LLM Program which is offered by an american university or law school.

astroturf Joined: 13 Dec 2005 Posts: 88	LLM in Petroleum Law Wed Dec 21, 2005 09:46 AM well i know that university of dundee and birmingham (both UK tho) offer courses in petroleum/oil & gas law..in US i think univ. of texas and new mexico have courses,,i suppose its more likely that universities down south offer courses in petro. law because of oil production in the region..but even though there might not be specialised LLM in petro. law, you might still find many univs. offering courses/modules on petro. law or oil n gas wich i think shud b as good..

astroturf Joined: 13 Dec 2005 Posts: 88	LLM in Petroleum Law Wed Dec 21, 2005 10:33 AM thts true tht new mexico does not hav an LLM,,bt they do hav a certificate prog. in natural resources law wich requires students to take 25credits (roughly th same as an llm program would require)..bt am not too sure bout admission in tis program,,may b u cud contact th admissions office for more info..

Can any body guide me as to what would be the percieved value after doing my LLM from this University? I mean what is the ranking or credibility of getting a law degree from University of Houston, please?

Programs are also offered by Utah, Tulane and Denver. The real question is what do you intend to do with the degree? If you plan to teach at the graduate level in the subject area, then it would be of significant value. Otherwise, it probably carries some weight with the major oil companies' in-house law departments or major energy law firms in the Gulf Coast.

However, as to the question of oilngaslaw regarding my subject area after llm, I would say that currently I am working for an oil company(upstream) wherein i have to look after the affairs of Joint Ventures(Commercial/legal), so naturally I will be interested towards a career in commercial/negotiation. However, I am still confused as to which institute should I attend among the following which would give me an edge both interms of cost and quality: I. University of Houston 2. Tulane 3. Denver. 4. Dundee-Scotland 5. University of Calgary-Canada. Anyone who would clear my confusion would simply buy me out in return, please. Thanx for your genuine interests.

oilngaslaw Joined: 11 Feb 2006 Posts: 2	LLM in Petroleum Law Tue Feb 14, 2006 12:55 AM I did not compare pricing, but I do not see how you could go wrong with any of the programs that you mentioned. Given your upstream experience, both Houston and Denver appear to have a curriculum well-suited to further personal development in that area. Houston's is the more established of the two programs, but that should not deter you from considering Denver. Tulane's program does not appear to be as specialized within the energy area even though the program is titled Energy & Environment. Of course, Dundee has an excellent reputation and Calgary is no slacker. Good luck.

The university is expensive to begin with...about 800+ dollars per credit hour, and I believe for LLM Petroleum you need 40. Living in Denver is also very expensive i.e. if you live where other law students live and want to get to know the industry and job market in the area since unlike other profession in law you have to present yourself with style and fashion. That said, DU program is excellent, especially the new 70 million dollar building and faculty.

Aurelius Joined: 17 Sep 2006 Posts: 128	LLM in Petroleum Law Wed Mar 28, 2007 03:25 PM You should consider Aberdeen's program!! Ranked fifth in the nation and a specialised LL.M in oil and gas law... Head quarters of oil companies (Shell, ...) in Aberdeen too.

I do not know if I gonna accept it because I am not qualified in france and am affraid not to find a job at the end of the programme. Do you think I should accept it?! Am I gonna find a job with my LLM?!
