Netherlands - which is the best??

Hi there,

I have applied for a LLM program in 3 universities in the Netherlands: Erasmus, Groningen and Leiden.

Which one have you heard of as the best one offering LLMs?

Just in case I get admitted by all of them and it becomes really difficult for me to decide .... !! : )

Hi there,

Leiden is the best one! Then Groningen, and the Rotterdam is not so good law school.

Hi all,
I am also about to apply for LLM program in Netherlands......its quite difficult to make up mind..........could someone help me with the best name for the program in international business law........and surely course in english....

would also be great if you could suggest a name beyond Netherlands.......in the stream...

So Leiden or Groningen best in International Law???

April 1st (start per 1 September), October 1st (start per 1 February)

Late Applications
Please note that late applications will not necessarily be refused but applications after these dates may lead to a delay in the processing of your application. Early applications are encouraged and will be processed in order of arrival.

Deadline for application

The application form together with all required documents for admission must be submitted in duplicate before 1 June 2006 at the very latest.

NB: students, whose participation is dependant upon receipt of a scholarship from any organisation, should be aware that they first have to be admitted to the Programme before they can apply for a scholarship. The deadlines of scholarship programmes may vary.

Hi again!!

I've been searching on some dutch universities websites and i discovered that the tuition fees are really high in some of them, and much lower on the others. For example, the LLM in International Law is more a less 1,500 € in Gronigen, but almost 9,000 € in Maastrich and Utrecht, all this if you're EU citizen! How is this possible?? Are the expensive ones so much better than the others??

I have no idea on this difference in tuition fees. I am not a EU citizen and I still have to pay some aproximately 9000 Euros at Groningen too.

In your case, if you have no financial problem with affording 10.000 Euro fees, I'd say you'd better decide depending on the reputation of the universities.

yeah sure!!
but from what i saw it seems to me that Groningen its really a good choice then - it's the cheapest and it seems it has a really good reputation (www.llm-guide.com/board/488 and ed.sjtu.edu.cn/rank/2005/ARWU2005_TopEuro.htm).

Leiden and Groningen are the 2 oldest universities in the Netherlands. Both cities are really crowded with students.

Groningen was considered the best law school in the netherlands in 2005, according to a government ranking: www.rug.nl/Rechten/nieuws/

However, Leiden has historically a stronger international law reputation.

And, apart from the reputation of the universities, what about the LLMs on International Law they offer?!?
Which do you recommend?! Leiden or Groningen!?!

Hi again. I am also between Groningen and Leiden, though Leiden is far more expencive than Groningen. 11,750 euros are lots of money. I am also thinking about Amsterdam. I am so confused.....heeeeeelp!!!!!!!

I have been admitted to Groningen. I have no reply from Leiden. I think I'll choose Groningen. I don't know what to suggest, pal.

Anyway, I think they're both very reputable universities, so just go ahead and choose one. If you think Leiden is more expensive then you might opt for Groningen.

Hi Geoman, are you Georgian?!
I'd suggest you not to think too much. Just pick Amsterdam. Even though other cities may be calm and student oriented, Amsterdam is the place to spend time.
I'm currently studying at Vrije University .. doing LLM in Commercial and Trade Law.

Hi. Yes, the fact that I want to study in the netherlands has to do also with amsterdam. i realy enjoy the life there...!!!no, i am greek.

I also got offers from Utrecht,Groningen and Vrijie.U seems to be higher than others in world rankings,G seems to be more better in overall sides,and V has the great location~~hard to choose~hard to choose!~~~~~help me guys~!

There is not really a big quality difference in law schools... There is not a particular 'bad' law school, only Leyden and UvA were rated bad for a few years but I think they are working hard to fight back.
At Groningen law school it is hard to pass exams, harder than elsewhere, and domestic law firms seem to like that. Vrije is the Christian (sometimes better rated) university of Amsterdam, but is located further from the city centre than UvA, which is the top choice for Amsterdam-lovers.

International rankings are not to be taken too seriously, I guess it is not really a top priority of law schools in the netherlands to get a high ranking.

Hi Wouter, I have been accepted from Groningen but still no news from Leiden. If you had to choose on eof the two, which one would you choose. I am interested in international law of armed conflict and peace.

from those you have mentioned i think i would choose Leiden, although not all courses they offer are equally good. in European Business Law i would also consider Pallas LL.M. don't worry about the application deadlines, an friend of mine applied late and got accepted nevertheless. the program is really good with approx. 60 professors teaching in all 8 subject during the year.

anything you choose in NL, avoid accomodation with Woonstichting De Key by any means necessary!

Law comes in many different flavours, and hence it is hard to compare the different universities. Please be aware that at least 90% of the law degrees are in domestic (dutch) law, which I suppose is not very interesting for internationals.
For international and European law I would consider Utrecht, Leiden and Amsterdam.
Groningen is a decent law faculty, but not for international law.
Leiden is popular among Americans because it is a well known old university.
Amsterdam and Utrecht offer the best teaching; more dynamic and up to date than the Leiden program (some old -but famous- profs there).
If the international moot court (Jessup) results are anything to go by, than pick Amsterdam. They won 4 out of 5 national competitions over the last 5 years.
