Wayne State University Law School offers a graduate Master of Laws (LL.M.) Program for practicing lawyers in Michigan. The program provides advanced study in three popular fields of specialization:

  • Corporate and Finance Law
  • Labor and Employment Law
  • Taxation

The graduate program is offered primarily in the evening on a part-time basis, although full-time curricula combining day and evening courses can be arranged. The degree requirements can normally be met in one year of full-time study or from two to six years of part-time study.

Graduate courses are taught by full-time members of the Law School faculty and by leading practitioners from the metropolitan Detroit area. The interaction of professional educators and skilled, practicing lawyers is an added benefit to graduate study at the Law School.

Graduates of non-U.S. law schools:

  • Each state establishes its own rules for admission to the practice of law in that state, which generally include a written examination administered by the state.  Students with degrees from non-U.S. law schools are not permitted to take the examination, or apply for admission to the bar, in every state.  Accordingly, international students interested in seeking admission to the bar in a particular state should refer to that state’s statutes, court rules and bar examination requirements.  For example, Michigan LL.M. students generally may take the bar examination in New York and California, two states of high interest for lawyers with international practices.  International students interested in seeking admission to the Michigan bar must comply with M.C.L. 600.934, available at http://legislature.mi.gov/doc.aspx?mcl-600-934.  The State Bar of Michigan offers additional information on bar admission and eligibility requirements at http://www.michbar.org/professional/admissionprocess.cfm. The American Bar Association (ABA) offers links to each state’s bar admissions requirements at www.abanet.org/legaled/baradmissions/barcont.html.
