Research Degrees

[c] The Law School welcomes applications for Research Degrees from both home and overseas students.

The Research degrees offered by the Law School are:

LLM by Research
This involves a thesis of up to 40,000 words.

MPhil
This involves a thesis of up to 60,000 words.

PhD
This involves a thesis of up to 80,000 words.

All students attend a research methods course and theory seminars.

The minimum lengths of registration for these degrees are PhD (3 years), MPhil (2 years) and LLM (1 year).

The Research Degree programme attempts to achieve a balance between individual study with supervision, and a communal learning environment. Students usually meet with supervisors fortnightly. Students working on similar research topics are encouraged to discuss their work with one another. The School has developed a specialised training programme for research students which includes, in addition to individual supervision, a Research Methods Course over two terms, an intensive Research Methods Workshop, a Theory and Research Course and Information Technology Training. The Law School provides a weekend retreat of research students, which is intended to develop a self critical assessment of research techniques and provide students with the opportunity to benefit from each others experience.

The School with forty members of staff is able to offer research supervision over a wide range of legal topics

English Language Instruction

Teaching is conducted in English and all essays, dissertations and theses must be written in English. Applicants from non-English speaking countries must produce evidence of written and spoken English proficiency adequate for their course of study. Candidates will normally be expected to have obtained one of the recognised English Language qualifications:

  • British Council International Testing System (IELTS) with a score of at least 7;

  • Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) with a score of at least 620 (paper based) or 260 (computer based).

The Centre for English Language Teaching (CELTE) at the University runs a variety of courses to improve English proficiency, including a nine month intensive course in English, pre-sessional courses of twelve weeks (beginning July), eight weeks (beginning August) and four weeks (beginning September), and booster courses during Term. We strongly recommend any student with doubts about their English language proficiency to enrol on the appropriate CELT course. A separate fee is charged for such courses.
