Students wishing to register for PhD (Doctor of Philosophy) are normally expected to hold a Master's award in a relevant area. Applicants for MPhil (Master of Philosophy) will normally be required to have a first or second class honours degree. Those accepted for registration for MPhil may be allowed to apply for transfer to PhD registration at a latter date, subject to satisfactory research progress.
The School of Law offers supervision of students wishing to pursue research programmes for the award of MPhil and PhD degrees. Students may undertake research either full-time or part-time. All students accepted for an MPhil/PhD programme are assigned to a Director of Studies. At least one second supervisor will also be appointed.
The faculty welcomes enquiries relating to the fields of law and criminal justice. Areas of research in which staff are active include American Criminal Justice System, Death Penalty Studies, US Constitutional Law,Comparative Constitutional Law, (Julian Killingley, Dave Keefe and Anne Oakes); Environment Law (Dr Haydn Davies); Intellectual Property Law (Dr Ewan Kirk); Medical Law and Ethics (Timothy James) International Human Rights and Conflict Resolution (Joanne Coysh); EU Competition Law (Owen Saunders); Corporate Insolvency and Corporate Accountability (Keith Gompertz);Corporate Trusts and Pensions and Investment Regulations (Meryl Thomas);Child Law and Sports Law (David Hartley); Corporate Crime and Criminal Justice Process (Graham Wright); Jurisprudence of Natural Rights, Legal Theory and Ethics (Chris Daines); Employment Law and Labour Relations (Mike Spencer)
Financial bursaries may be available in suitable cases for Death Penalty Studies and Criminal Justice related research.
