The University

Dundee is located on the east coast of Scotland. It is little more than an hour away from Edinburgh and Glasgow and has direct air and rail connections to London. The University aims to provide high quality facilities and the right conditions for its students to succeed, all in a friendly environment.
The Law School
The study of law at Dundee has a long and distinguished history. Dundee became an independent university in 1967 after a 70 year relationship with the University of St. Andrews where the teaching of law started nearly six centuries ago. The Law School was awarded the top rating in the latest review of teaching quality by the Scottish Higher Education Quality Assurance Agency and Dundee University as a whole was named top university for teaching quality in the United Kingdom in 2005. In 2008 `The Good University Guide' ranked the Dundee School of Law 8th in the United Kingdom.
The Law School has a strong postgraduate culture and offers a wide range of taught postgraduate degrees, as well as supervision at both LL.M. and Ph.D. levels. In 2007 - 2008 we admitted students to our LL.M programmes from the following countries: Argentina, China, Croatia, Germany, Kazakhstan, India, Iraq, Nigeria, Norway, Pakistan, Uganda, the United Kingdom, the United States and Zimbabwe.
The Program

The Dundee LL.M. is academically rigorous and challenging. Our programmes reflect issues of contemporary academic interest, practical relevance and our own research strengths. They are composed of a variety of carefully selected modules which are designed to inter-relate and so allow students to construct a specific theme to their general area of study. Students must also complete a dissertation on a subject related to their programme specialism.
We pride ourselves at Dundee as being a friendly Law School where all members of staff are accessible and students are treated as individuals and valued members of our legal community. We aim to provide you with the resources and assistance you need to increase your legal skills and maximise your knowledge acquisition. In particular reference can be made to:
- our Induction Programme for new students at the start of each semester. Knowledge components ensure that all students have the necessary understanding of the UK and European legal systems as well as core principles of public and private law. Within the skills elements students are introduced to our legal resources and made aware of what is required of them in terms of research and academic writing;
- learning at Dundee is by way of independent study, through directed reading and weekly seminars (20 Contact Hours per module). Small group teaching is guaranteed for all courses, with a maximum of 20 students per seminar;
- Regular and detailed feedback is essential to achieving success on an LL.M. and at Dundee we commit to having two pieces of written work per module, which will be marked within two weeks, with detailed comments provided.
A successful LL.M. programme also depends on the wider learning environment and we seek to integrate all LL.M. students into the life of the Law School. To this end:
- LL.M. students are invited to all guest lectures and seminars;
- Monthly staff – LL.M. lunches allow students to meet with all members of the School in an informal setting;
- There is an annual reading party to The Burn House with senior members of staff. This allows staff and students to meet over three days in a beautiful country house location and to work on academic skills and dissertation preparation.
Taught LL.M programmes have two intakes each year : one in September and one in January.
