The University

The Law School

UBC Faculty of Law offers students one of the largest and most diverse course lists in Canada taught by highly knowledgeable and engaged faculty, and supported by well-developed student services, including a dedicated career services office. Graduates of all degrees, including JD and graduate degrees, have assumed positions of leadership, nationally and internationally, in the legal profession, government, the judiciary, public interest organizations, business and academia.

The Program

UBC Law offers one of Canada’s oldest and most well-respected Masters (LL.M.) and Doctorate (Ph.D.) programs in Law. These research-based degrees, which focus on a thesis or dissertation, offer students the opportunity to engage in advanced and focused study in their chosen area of law. UBC also offers a course-based masters degree - the LL.M. Common Law - that provides a rigorous background in Canadian law and the common law.

Each degree is tailored to provide students from diverse cultural, academic, and professional backgrounds with an opportunity to engage in challenging and innovative graduate study.

The LL.M. in Common Law (LLM CL) is a course-based LL.M. program designed to provide foundational training in the common law and Canadian law for lawyers with foreign or non-common law legal training. It also provides the opportunity for foreign-trained lawyers to do the course-work required to practice law in Canada.

The Master of Laws (LLM) is a research-intensive LL.M. degree that combines course work with a thesis to provide an opportunity for focused study.

The Ph.D. is a rigorous research-intensive degree that includes course work, comprehensive exams, and a dissertation proposal defence that lead to a dissertation which is intended to make a substantial contribution to the chosen field of study.

The Faculty

The faculty members at UBC Law are leaders in their fields. Broad-ranging in their interests and experience, they are passionate and inspiring teachers who are producing some of the most innovative legal scholarship in the country. Areas of particular expertise, with supporting centres, include Aboriginal peoples and the law, Asian legal studies, business law, environmental and natural resource law, and feminist legal studies,

UBC Law is situated on UBC's stunning Vancouver campus, which is located on the edge of one of the world's most livable cities.

The UBC Faculty of Law opened a brand new facility in September 2011. Our brand new, state-of-the-art building was built to achieve LEED Gold certification and will provide the physical space and technology to support new approaches to teaching and research. Located on one of the most beautiful campuses in the world, the new building was also designed to enhance the strong sense of community and collegiality that are at the heart of the Faculty.
