The Law School

The Program

The LL.M. in U.S. Law for Foreign Lawyers is offered by Washington University School of Law in both an on-campus and an online environment. These LL.M. programs are an ideal environment for experienced attorneys and recent law graduates alike to pursue any of a number of significant professional and academic goals, such as:
-Gaining practical and theoretical knowledge of U.S. and international law.
-Developing expertise in a specialized field of law.
-Strengthening your ability to represent clients who have business dealings in the U.S. or with U.S. companies and firms.
-Improving your representation of American clients who conduct business abroad.
-Building an international network of professional contacts.
-Refining your English skills and understanding of American culture.
The @WashULaw Master of Laws (LL.M.) program is a dynamic online LL.M. program for foreign lawyers offered by the Washington University School of Law. Delivered through state-of-the-art online technologies, @WashULaw courses effectively integrate live classroom sessions with streaming video and self-paced content.
In live classroom sessions, Washington University law faculty and @WashULaw students meet at pre-arranged times for coursework discussions, study groups and face-to-face office hour meetings. The self-paced content offers students high-quality, faculty-designed coursework, highly produced video content and an interactive social technology platform that allows students to chat, study and join communities with fellow classmates and professors 24 hours a day. During the summer, @WashULaw students will be offered an intensive U.S. immersion program in St. Louis, Washington D.C., and other American cities to experience U.S. law from inside U.S. courtrooms and law firms.

Washington University School of Law also offers LL.M. programs in Taxation and in Intellectual Property & Technology Law, both offered on-campus. These programs are intended to provide an in-depth course of study in two highly technical and detail-oriented areas of practice.
The Master of Laws (LL.M.) in Taxation program at Washington University School of Law offers a rigorous course of study in the field of tax law, with a broad range of tax and corporate courses and schedules designed for working professionals. The Master of Laws (LL.M.) in Taxation program at Washington University School of Law offers a rigorous course of study in the field of tax law. Our full-time faculty and leading practitioners in the field offer specialized, practical training and individualized attention in small class sizes, typically fewer than ten students, which offer our unique tax curriculum.
The IP/TL LL.M. curriculum allows students to study introductory and advanced intellectual property law and to scrutinize the politics affecting those areas of the law under the guidance of leading scholars in the field. The IP/TL LL.M. student body is drawn from two distinct sources. First, we admit J.D. graduates from across the United States who desire to focus their legal expertise through one year of intensive study of intellectual property law. Second, we admit experienced intellectual property attorneys from abroad who want to broaden their IP knowledge to include U.S. and international intellectual property.
Washington University, separate from the @WashULaw program, offers an online Legal English course for students who are interested in improving their English skills while learning about the U.S. Legal System. For more information on the legal english program visit the program page on our website.
The Faculty

Entry Requirements

In addition, candidates for LL.M. in U.S. Law for Foreign Lawyers must submit:
(1) an application which includes two brief essays
(2) an application fee
(3) two recommendation letters
(4) official academic transcripts in English with class rank from all schools attended
(5) indication of English-language proficiency (students for whom English is not a native tongue are required to submit a score on TOEFL, ILEC, or IELTS)
(6) interview
