University of Heidelberg

The University of Heidelberg is one of the top-ranking locations in the world of international science and scholarship. As Germany`s oldest seat of higher learning (1386) it can look back on a tradition for which it is envied by many other universities, not only in Germany.
Soon after its foundation, the University had firmly established its position in Europe's intellectual landscape. In the initial period, renowned theologians and jurists figured prominently among the Elector's counsellors, while the list of alumni included chancellors, bishops and royal emissaries. Later, in the 15th century, Heidelberg developed into a stronghold of humanism.

When the University of Heidelberg celebrated its 600th anniversary in 1986, the motto chosen to mark the occasion was “ A Tradition for the Future”. This motto is an apt reflection of the pride with which the University looks back on six centuries of scholarly and scientific achievement making it not only one of the oldest universities in the world but also one of the most renowned and forward-looking centers of learning in existence.

Today, the University of Heidelberg represents a full-scale, classical, research-oriented university with a broad range of subjects – from ancient history to zoology. In many of these, its outstanding prominence is uncontested, both nationally and internationally, as is borne out by the large number of collaborative research centers and postgraduate research groups funded by the German Research Foundation.

Heidelberg Center for Latin America

The Heidelberg Center for Latin America was founded in 2001 as an offshore graduate center of the University of Heidelberg, based in Santiago, Chile. Until today, it is the only graduate center of any German university in Latin America. Its strategic targets are the organisation and the marketing of study programs developed exclusively at the University of Heidelberg or in cooperation with its Chilean partners, the Universidad Católica and the Universidad de Chile.

The Heidelberg Center"s educational offer consists currently in:
- A joint doctoral program in Psychotherapy: The Etiology of Depression (in cooperation with the Universidad Católica and the Universidad de Chile).
- A joint Master of Laws in International Law (LLM), in cooperation with the Universidad de Chile.
- Joint Further Education Courses in the fields of Law, Medicine, Psychotherapy, Astrophysics and Medical Radiation Physics.
- German Courses in all levels.

The study programs attract students not only from all over Latin America, but also from Europe, the United States and, most recently, from Asia. After a successful testing period in Chile, the Heidelberg Center exports legal programs to other countries in Latin America, such as Ecuador, Mexico and Paraguay.
