The University

Sydney Harbour

The University of New South Wales is one of Australia’s foremost international research-intensive universities, attracting outstanding scholars and students from around the world. It is highly regarded for both its teaching excellence and innovative research.

Established in 1949, UNSW has expanded rapidly and now has close to 40,000 students, including more than 7,000 international students from over 130 different countries. 40% of our students are undertaking postgraduate coursework or higher research studies and the University has an alumni network of over 180,000 graduates around the world.

The main UNSW campus is located on a leafy 38-hectare site at Kensington in the heart of Sydney’s eastern beachside suburbs, seven kilometres from the centre of the city.

The Law School

UNSW Law School

UNSW Law School leads all Australian universities for the quality of learning and teaching law. For three consecutive years (2007, 2008, 2009) the Faculty of Law, together with UNSW Australian School of Business, has achieved the Federal Government’s top ranking in the business, law and economics cluster.

Two features have always distinguished UNSW Law – small interactive classes with high levels of interchange between students and faculty members (20-35 students per class at postgraduate level); and wide scope for our students and scholars to have direct practical engagement in law.

Employers have come to expect that our graduates will bring critical perspectives to their work as well as doctrinal knowledge and analytic skill; and that they will work flexibly and effectively with a wide range of clients in many different settings. All this is no accident. By design and from the beginning, our Faculty’s distinctive approach to teaching has given students the opportunity to study law as a conceptual framework, while also experiencing it as a working process, an instrument for seeking justice, and a lever for social change. Again by design, our research programs lend themselves to this more engaged, aware and interactive approach.

New in 2010, the UNSW JD is a professional law degree for graduates of disciplines other than law. It can be used as a basis for seeking admission to the legal profession.

At UNSW Law school, the JD gives students a particularly broad range of opportunities for high-level experiential learning in order to gain a critical and deep understanding of the law in areas which will especially benefit them in their future careers. Included in our long list of electives are a number of courses which offer direct engagement with legal practice in the form of social justice internships, hands-on experience in the Kingsford Legal Centre, a community legal centre located on campus, national and international mooting competitions and an international exchange program.

Applications are now open to the UNSW JD for students to commence study in 2010. For more information: www.law.unsw.edu.au/jd

The LLM degree comprises eight courses (subjects), enabling full time students to complete their degree in one year (two semesters).

Students can choose to undertake general studies in their degree or incorporate a major sequence. The specialist streams of study available are:

 Taxation

LLM classes are held on our Kensington campus, at our new city campus and in city law firms, enabling students to learn from both leading academics and respected practitioners.

Courses are offered in either a semester long (12 x two-hour weekly classes) or intensive format, which allows students to complete a course over four to five days.

As an LLM student, you will enjoy exclusive access to the law postgraduate computer and study room, located in our new purpose-built Law Faculty building. Students also have free online access to major Australian and international legal databases and journals.

The Faculty

UNSW Faculty of Law comprises the School of Law and the Australian School of Taxation and has 12 affiliated legal research and training centres, all housed within the new law building.

The Faculty has over 70 dedicated teachers and researchers, supported by a strong cohort of adjunct professors, drawn from leading Australian lawyers and visiting international academics.

The School of Law works closely with the Faculty’s specialist research centres, with many contributing actively to our postgraduate programs through course development and teaching. In this way students benefit from the latest legal policy and research developments nationally and internationally.
