The Law School

Due to the long European tradition of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg as well as the proximity of several European institutions such as the European Court of Justice (ECJ), the Court of First Instance (CFI), the European Court of Auditors (ECA), the European Investment Bank (EIB) and the European Investment Fund (EIF), and Luxembourg’s financial centre, the University of Luxembourg's Faculty of Law, Economics and Finance Master in European Law is strongly oriented towards European, transnational and comparative law.

The Law School with its dynamic faculty profits both in teaching and research from the close cooperation with the mentioned institutions, as well as the focus on the interdependence of economy and law.

The Program

Luxembourg’s Master in European Law is unique in the sense that you can either follow a general Master in European Law or concentrate on one of three specialisations covering European Litigation, European Criminal Law or European Banking and Financial Law. Further, you have the choice between a one or two year programme which is bilingual and taught in both French and English.

European Litigation:
This specialisation which approaches EU law from the point of view of European litigation is taught by a faculty of unmatched expertise composed of judges and advocate generals from the European Court of Justice, the Court of First Instance, as well as specialised and internationally renowned academics from various universities and institutions. Students will be exposed to litigation procedures and litigation in various policy fields, taught by modern, interactive methods.
The last semester ends with a two month internship, for example at one of the Courts, the European Commission or a specialised law firm. Students will be awarded a Master degree from Luxembourg and France through the University of Luxembourg, the Universities Robert Schuman of Strasbourg and Nancy.

European Banking and Financial Law :
The specialisation in European Banking and Financial Law of the Master in European Law, offers a high level curriculum which covers both the theoretical and the practical aspects of this subject. The programme benefits from the support of prestigious private and public partners, at the European and national level. The proximity of the European Union institutions in Luxembourg and the presence of a major and dynamic financial centre, open to Europe and the World, makes Luxembourg an ideal setting – on a pleasant scale but very international – for gaining expertise in banking and financial law, an experience which will be appreciated in all of Europe.

European Criminal Law :
This specialisation in the Master teaches the relevant legal, economic and financial knowledge necessary for the prevention and crackdown of business and financial crime in the European Union. The programme is multidisciplinary and integrates law, economics and finance. Lectures of the Master deal with European criminal law, European cooperation in criminal matters, protection of financial interest of the European Community, white collar crime, financial fraud, law and economics, as well as the prevention of money laundering, counterfeit, cyber crime and customs fraud and are taught by a highly qualified faculty using modern teaching methods. Also here all students do a traineeship during the second semester integrating theory and practice into the education.
