The University

Bangor University was founded in 1884, making it one of the oldest and most prestigious universities in the UK. The Law School

Bangor University School of Law is making waves in the UK legal education scene with its unique offering of graduate and postgraduate law programmes.

Headed up by Professor Dermot Cahill, author of Corporate Finance Law (Sweet & Maxwell) and European Law (Oxford University Press), Bangor University School of Law is offering an exciting range of single and joint Law programmes aimed at those who want to specialise in all areas of law, especially business law, as well as those aiming at careers in management and banking.

The courses address contemporary issues relevant to the business and political environment worldwide and they will equip students with the knowledge and skills required for operating successfully in the global market.

With the ever changing environment of business, trade, society and our way of life in the 21st century, legal systems and regulations must also adapt and evolve, and Bangor Law degrees address and reflect these changes.

The LLM COMMERCIAL LAW directed by Howard Johnson offers an exciting, commercially-relevant programme that provides an in-depth curriculum and thorough training in the law, policy and legal regulation that governs some key areas of commerce and industry worldwide. The MA BANKING AND LAW is an interdisciplinary programme that will enable the student to study key legal and regulatory developments affecting the financial sector. This includes the regulation of financial services, security instruments, corporate finance, arbitration and other issues affecting modern banks at UK, EU and international level. The Faculty

Our team of enthusiastic and multilingual staff have taught in the United Kingdom and other European countries and our courses reflect this international expertise.

Its Faculty members are truly international, being graduates of Oxford, Cambridge, London School of Economics, Wuhan (China), Birmingham, Cadiz (Spain), the National University of Ireland and the University of Wales. Faculty members have published major works for example Dr Mark Hsiao recently published a book on International Financial Instruments.

Entry Requirements

Masters Degree entry requirements - normally a student will be expected to have the equivalent of a lower second-class single or joint-honours bachelor degree in Law or in a related subject such as Economics, Business, Banking Accounting, Finance etc from a Bangor University recognised institution. Mature students who are not in possession of a bachelor degree will be considered on the basis of work and business experience.

For the LLM Masters degrees, an IELTS test score of 6.5 (with a pass in all elements of at least 6.0) will be required. An equivalent score in alternative tests will be accepted.

For the MBA and MA Masters degrees, an IELTS test score of 6.0 (with a pass in all elements of at least 5.5) will be required. An equivalent score in alternative tests will be accepted.

Students from all over the world have chosen to study at Bangor for many years and so we are familiar with overseas education systems and are experienced in making offers of entry based on qualifications awarded worldwide. * the bachelor degree certificate may follow later but must be viewed prior to registration.

Mature students are also advised to submit a reference from an employer and detail in the Personal Statement their professional experience and responsibilities.

Financial Aid

An LLM Student Bursary valued at £2,000 is available to all International Students who choose to study an LLM degree.

The LLM student bursary is an introductory offer in 2008 only, to launch our new suite of LLM degree programmes. Successful candidates will automatically receive the bursary as a reduction of the tuition fee. The published fee of £8,500 will be reduced by £2,000 to a fee payable of £6,500.

Gold Scholarships valued at £5,000 and Silver Scholarships valued at £2,000 are available for the study of the joint masters degrees MA and MBA in Law. The scholarships will be awarded to students enrolling from September 2008.

Through our experience of working with students from overseas, we understand that your accommodation is very important to you. We therefore make every effort to support you and to help you arrange your accommodation during your studies. For Undergraduate students, we guarantee all first year students a place in University owned or managed accommodation provided you apply in plenty of time. Places in University accommodation are available for Postgraduate students, and the University also gives students guidance in finding accommodation off campus where there is a wide choice of good quality private options available. Summer Program

International students wishing to polish their English skills prior to the start of the academic year can attend our Pre-sessional courses run during the summer months. The course covers: Academic writing, Listening skills for lectures and seminars, Speaking skills, Reading strategies for academic writing, Introduction to word-processing, E-mail and the internet, Introduction to the use of the library, Specialist vocabulary for study.

There are 23 hours of contact per week. The course also provides a full social programme of evening activities and trips. Students with an IELTS score of 6.0 or above are recommended to take the one-month course. Those with a score of 5.5 should also do the July General English course before they begin.
