Best LLM in International Taxation.

Guys, just wanted to get your perspective on this subject. From a U.S. standpoint, NYU seems to tick all the boxes (it's been #1 in Tax for twenty years now in the U.S. News Ranking). Georgetown is also very good, though not as well known. Florida, the same.

In Europe, I would say Leiden is probably the first that comes to mind. Do you agree with this? Is there any university that you would rank above NYU and Leiden on the course subject of International Taxation?

Just want to get your take on this. Thanks!

Have you considered MIchigan's International Tax LLM program? Professor Avi-Yonah, who's in charge of the program, is a powerhouse in international tax. And he seems very good at placing his graduates in big law firms, if that is something you care about. Plus the program is very small so there's a lot of individual attention.

zemeckis07,

It all depends on where you want to practice. If you have a JD/LLB from outside the US applying for a LLM in tax programme within the US with the intent to practice in the US..? Unfortunately, you will have to take another LLM or required modules (courses in US) that will enable to you to take the US bar exam to practice. The only states that will allow for such a measure are California (CA) and New York (NY).

Note: if your JD/LLB does not come from a common law jurisdiction than you will be subjectively placed under mitigating circumstances. This involves filling out a lot of paperwork that allows the ABA to investigate the prestige and rigour of your prior programme. If your prior law degree qualifies you, to US standard, to practice. There will still be no guarantee to practice. Lastly, your level of competence will be tested.

Regarding European taxation or tax law. It would behoove you to research Vienna (Wien). Nevertheless Leiden and Vienna do equally par with regards to course recognition however many spectators would consider Vienna slightly better. Also, stay away from the UK (KCL, LSE and QMUL) regarding tax. Why? Because you would be wasting your time. [Personal opinion: in the UK you are allegedly better off undertaking Law and accounting.]

Kind regards.

Both are equivalent from the standpoint of international taxation, but Vienna has the added benefit of being located in a much larger city, with access to the headquarters of many multinationals. You can choose Leiden for the quality of its faculty, but really, the quality of the faculty that teaches at Vienna is about the same.
