LLM Banking/Financial law

Saroyan

Hi everybody,

I would like to study banking law in Europe (hoping that this will help me to get the job in that field in one of the German speaking countries....although I am from CEE region).
It seems that all the acceptable options are in the UK. Zurich and Frankfurt/M. are too expensive, Krems has no name...seems like pay for worthless title.
Luxembourg requiers French language :(

So now I consider Bangor (tuition fees are not so extremely high), Manchester (International Financial Law) or Leeds.
Edinburgh costs also too much and U. Reading has poor reputation.

Any advice, tips, experience....?
Thanks a lot....

I will recommend Glasgow for many reasons.

One, the city is a nice place to study with a very diverse student population. We had students from Germany,France,Spain,Singapore,Africa,China, etc all registered for the LLM course during the 2013/14 session.

Two,the professors in the LL.M prog are well renowned and experts in their fields.

Three, the seminars are usually in small groups giving students the opportunity to contribute. You also get to hear students from other jurisdictions share their thoughts on how the law works in their respective countries. This gives you new perspectives on how to solve some legal problems.

Fourth, Glasgow Uni (and the school of law) are highly ranked in Scotland and the whole of the UK.

You may also want to note that the cost of living here is reasonable and affordable. Anyone with a modest budget can leave decently and comfortably here.

I just graduated from the LLM programme in Corporate and Financial Law.Hence I think I am in a pole position to speak about the programme and the university in general.

Don't hesitate to ask if you have any more questions.

obioraezike : Thanks, it sounds good!

Ever considered the Netherlands?

Of course, every good university in Europe could be considered...but I think there is only one LLM programme in Netherlands focused on banking/financial law - in Duisenberg. It costs too much - 18 000 EUR :(

I have found some other possibilities to consider. What would you say to banking/finance at:
Queen Mary UL - not affordable without scholarship, but why not to try it?
UWE Bristol - I do not know much about the University..
University of Wolverhampton - I can´t even find the ranking of this university..
University of Hertfordshire - average ranking
Sussex - same as UoH
East London - ?
Westminster - only with scholasrhip
Univ. of Derby - not excessive tuition fees, but not entirely focused on banking and finance
Riga - IMHO last option, I am not very keeon on studying in Latvia, poor ranking and 7000 tuition....

My decision will depend on my IELTS score as universities in GB generally do not accept my ILEC (?!)...

Queen Mary has a very strong banking and finance llm so you should definately consider it!

Now about Sussex, yes it's not the best Uni but it is by no means at the same level as UoH. UoH is a mediocre to low Uni, while Sussex have a very very good law school. They have some very high level academics, some of the best in the UK in 2-3 subjects!

PS: I did not study in Sussex :p + I don't consider it to be a top Uni but it does have a quite reputable law school

Hello,

Firstly, I would like to ask what are possibilities to enter on the mentioned universities? I wasn't top student of my generation, so I am a little bit worried about mu chances to enter.
I am talking about regular entering, without scolarships.

Secondly, I am interested in possibilites for work after the master. Sharing some expirience about this would be really useful.

Andrej, finally I was studying at the UoM, can recommend it. I was admitted to all UK Unis I tried except of one (LSE - the application was both for the study programme and scholarship), but I believe my grades were above avarege. So try more universities, provide recommendations, experience, etc. and you will see.
And try some worse ranges UNIs (Bangor, Wolverhampton...) just for the case everything fails.

Work - it is very individual. My LLM really helped my at the market back home (Slovakia, Czech Rep.). On the other hand, my experience is, that it is harder to get an opportunity in Western Europe (if you are not from there), but it is not impossible.
