Beware of frauds ("Kay" is not an HLS student)

josepidal

Friends,

Those who follow the convoluted "employability," "hirability" and related threads have seen the posts of "Kay," an alleged present Harvard LLM.

"Kay" made extremely bitter statements emphasizing that it is very hard for LLMs to find US jobs, and so many Harvard LLMs can't find jobs. "Kay" made other posts, saying the World Bank is elitist and that it's hard to get in without connections.

I found this strange, and more so because I know every single one of my classmates, which is why every other alleged Harvard LLM here like gar33 from France has shared some personal banter with me. I also offered to sit down with Kay and discuss her alleged failed job search, but received no reply.

Kay's past posts reveal that she claims to be from Nairobi, Kenya and applied to the HLS Tax concentration. However, there is no one among my classmates with this profile who can be Kay, so I forwarded Kay's posts to the Harvard graduate program staff.

It's not hard to go through the rejection letters sent to Kenya to pinpoint the culprit, and the staff just got confirmed last Friday that Kay is a complete fraud and NOT a Harvard student.

I certainly hope no one takes Kay's extreme posts against any Harvard Kenyan or Tax LLM. Also, to update past replies to Kay, almost all Harvard LLMs looking for US jobs have found something to their liking at this point. It's been a great year in general for LLMs looking for US jobs.

I'm very disappointed that any LLM or LLM reject would resort to fraud for whatever reason. There will always be LLMs looking for jobs, and it's sad because recruiters and career advisors do check this board.

That said, one should take everything on the Internet with a grain of salt. There are many people here such as ivan2006 from NYU (well, I hope he really is from NYU and not posing as an irreverent Yankee) who have been kind enough to offer advice based on hard-earned experience, so I hope no one abuses this forum. The more LLMs succeed in the US market, the easier it will be for new LLMs to come in and for old LLMs to build the careers they want.

Of course, it seems trolls with negative statements will only multiply in employment-related threads, so I hope everyone exercises discretion and filters out the noise.

Well, I think I should add to this that Kay changed his/ her nickname this morning to "Profesir" and then changed it back to Kay.

After Jose´s inquiry, I think the burden of proof lies with Kay. As far as I remember, he/ she never provided for any hint of who he/ she is/ where he/ she is from - and I must confess that something about his/ her writing style made me suspicious. Not using capital letters of punctuation signs is an easy way to disguise your own writing style? Is he/ she a fraud? Well, I don´t know. Personally, I hope he/ she is not, since this generates a problem with creditibility in this website. All of a sudden, people may wonder whether some old-time participants in this forum are real: for instance, flygirl could be a UAlaska grad that never set foot in NYC, tmalmine could be a retired teacher writing from his country cottage in Scandinavia, Josepidal could be just the fictitious name used by a Filipino politician facing charges for money laundering, etc., etc. Even yueping could be fake. Yikes! And I could be a marry Canadian bored as hell, with multiple personality disorder, and I could be using 5 or 6 different aliases in this forum. Josepidal could be one of my aliases.

(Of course, I am just joking - since Jose said I was irreverent, I wanted to deserve it. And I am a NYU LL.M who lives at Mercer. Some people in this forum who contacted me even have my personal e-mail, so any of them could vouch for me).

Jokes apart, I think the credibility issue is a very serious one: every year, many LLM candidates that may have never been in the US before decide to apply for admission here. Many already have their plans, they may know where they go and what they would like to do after the LLM. Some are completely clueless and rely on the insights of other people to have an idea of where to apply. And the reason why I write here is because I would have loved to know what I know now before coming to the US. I don´t think anybody will have an epiphany reading my posts, but I like to think that I could have eventually helped somebody.

I hope Kay replies to Jose´s post clarifying his/ her story.

Before Dean Kagan (already mad over the Washington Post article against autoadmit) speaks to "Kay"'s law dean back in Kenya.

Well said, Ivan.

I am not sure what this means. Were you not straight up or are u an actual HLS LLM? just curious because these two lines are susceptible to two interpretations....both regrettable.

People waste their time and energy with little idiotic things like generating chaos and misinformation in a useful website. My perception is that people like you don't even stop to think about what they are doing. I'm really sorry that the story ended up with the dean (really?) of hls calling the dean of your law school in kenya. You really screwed up. The whole episode is bizarre.

Two further notes. First, you are certainly not the first person doing this kind of thing. Remember the famous "douchebag"?

Second, I was surprised to see how easily many of my classmates who wanted positions in either law firms or international org. got jobs.

I would love to know something more about him/ her. Since he/ she wanted to apply for a Tax LLM, I would like to make sure that NYU´s admissions office blacklists this person. A shame...

There are other trolls in this forum as well - specially in the employability-related posts.

Look: She/He screwed up really bad but as I said it is inappropriate, as far as I can see, to generate a moralistic spiral. It surprises me that you guys really believed that everybody in this website was honest. Many of the posts seems to me obviously fraudulent. I wouldn't be too harsh on Kay. This is a little -- and ridiculous -- breach of little rules of everyday morality, not a big deal. I love hls but I dont think that Kay will have any influence on the school's reputation or strength. The whole idea of crushing a student from Kenya that is apparently posting fraudulent info about one llm program is both exaggerated and off the mark.

Gar, you´re right. My comment was exaggerated and sounded "taliban".
However, I would not call it a little breach of everyday morality rules - misdemeanors like that have big implications in real life. Specially in the US (e.g. the code of honor). But let´s not argue about that. In any case, we agree that what Kay has done is contemptible.
Just one additional remark: of course, I do not believe everybody here is honest, but some people might believe so, specially the one who are new to this forum - do you remember your first posts? Suppose some impersonator had trashed your dream schools (YLS, HLS) back then...

This discussion board is extremely useful.
It's a shame that there are frustrated people giving wrong advice.
But I was actually surprised that there were on this board so many fellow applicants and students giving valuable advice...

In that case the right thing to do is searching for 100% reliable sources... not an anonymous internet discussion board... :p

But ok, I don't understand people like Kay neither... give 'real' information or shut the fuck up*...:)

* Pardon my French ;)

there are quite a number of posters given to embellishment...i've just been reading through last years HLS admission season posts and landed upon one fellow (whom i wont name) claiming to be turning down HLS, with a "full scholarship" for "another school" he/she did not specify:D

course...but the fishy thing about this was that the full scholarship was from HLS, and was communicated at the same time the admission was made. i do not know much about how the range of awards offered and the timing thereof, but the willingness to give such(self serving detail) on the one hand, compared to the scant info about the "other school" all combined to create the "stink"...but the broader observation is that at least some of the posters here are given to hyperbole..and as gar33 points out, while this is deplorable, it is to be expected on any forum such as this.

Supra (he...he..some fun with the latin handles)...no really, HLS is just a school...granted..the broader issue is about the susceptability of a forum such as this to misuse..and appropriate responses thereto

i hope am not turning into one of the fabled "trolls"!

It was to Kenya because Kay is from Kenya and that's far enough. Substitute Kenya for Portugal, France or Brazil however. I didn't mean at all to discriminate against Kenya!!
