Any thoughts?

Hello,
I'm a Swiss guy, and in Switzerland, Columbia is better considered than NYU. As far as I'm concerned, I would go to Columbia (Farnsworth in contracts or Ginsburg on Copyright are just amazing scholars). But I admit NYU is better located.

I am going for Columbia - (will pay my deposit in the next few hours) but I am considering off-campus housing

It really depends what you want to do. I would seriously consider NYU as in the States, it has a strong reputation. Depending on the year, NYU Law is often ranked higher than Columbia. If you are in corporate, go with Columbia. It is an Ivy League with more tradition behind it. If you want to do public interest/human rights/such related areas, I would definitely go to NYU. I've know quite a few students in the public interest area who were rather disillusioned with their experience at Columbia because they did not feel as supported by the administration and faculty in terms of scholarship opportunities, internships, job placements, etc. Columbia is definitely more conservative.

Does anyone know how many LLMs (ALL programs in total) are accepted at NYU each year?

A friend of mine graduated from the LL.M. at Columbia about three years ago, she said they were 100. In another post, smb has written that NYU has about 400 LL.M. students, according to their website.

Weren't you doing a DEA at Paris II in 2002/2003? I was doing a DEA in international private law and I think I saw you.
Congratulations for your admission at NYU. Unfortunately, I have received no anwser by now, except Chicago where I am on a waiting list. I did not imagine that it would be that difficult as most professors said that people graduated from Paris II could get one of the top 5!!

To Zopie: that's right, I got my DEA at Paris II in 2003:))
What have you been doing since then?
I got NYU, Michigan, Cornell, Wake Forest and Missouri-Columbia. Waiting list for Harvard. Still waiting for Columbia's decision.
What universities did you apply to? What have you been told in Chicago about the waiting list? When should you expect a decision?

so you are the one I saw. Since my DEA, I did the EFB and got my CAPA in december. I am working in a big law firm in coporate law. I have only applied to HLS, NYU, Columbia, and Chicago. There is litlle chance for me to get into the Chicago LLM program as only 15 students out of 100 may get an offer.

I am doing my LLM at CLS now (2004-2005). I am very happy with my study here. (But since I have never studied at NYU, I still can't say which one is better.) After your conversation above, I think there are 2 things you guys may want to know.
1. Prof. Farnsworth (whom Bitsou referred to) passed away a few months ago. None of my classmates had a chance to study with him, too.
2. Currently, there are approximately 200 LLM students at CLS each year. That's quite a large number, but still smaller than NYU's.

Ohh I didn't know he passed away a few months ago...that's quite a shock...

sc2411, how do you feel about such a big number of LL.M. students? Do you think it does not matter for your studies?

Since we take the same classes as JD students (2L and 3L), whose number much larger than ours, I think it makes do difference whether there are 50 or 200 LLM students.
I each class I attends, approximately 20-30% of students are LLM. I feel perfectly comfortable with that.

Well, I don't agree with this approach. I believe that if a law school admits large number of LL.M students, it also means that there are a lot of JD students. Therefore, the classes must be much more crowded in NYU than other small law schools, especially in some popular courses such as business law etc. Am I not right?

It depends on how good each law school handle with the problem. For example, at Columbia, there are 2 sections of Corporations in Fall, and 2 more in Spring. NYU is doing the same thing, I believe.
Besides keeping the classes not to big, this will allow us to choose the time (and the professor) we feel most comfortable with.

Can you tell us more about Columbia since you have first hand knowledge? The quality of the courses? Do you feel welcome among the faculty JD students or do LLM's play second fiddle? How about career prospects? Any courses you highly recommend? Thanks

I would be happy to have this information too. Indeed, I finally chose Columbia (between NYU + Columbia) but have not notified the refusal to NYU yet (I have indeed not obtained from UPS that they would deliver my package before Monday, so I haven not seen that admission so far ... ).

Please tell me my final decision is ok . I am mainly interested in Corporate & finance.

My 2 concerns about CLS are: Master papers + Columbia's location (said to be very disadvantageous)
